The Sea Islander started as the CB handle for my grandfather (PopPop), Captain Samuel C. Perry, Jr., U.S.M.C., Retired. He and my grandmother (Memama), Martha Inez "Pug" Perry, also know as the Palmetto Lady on the CB, settled in the Lowcountry of South Carolina when he retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. Sam and Pug, as they were known by their friends, went on to open The Sea Island Print Shop, which they ran from the 1960's to the 1990's.
Our grandparents were always avid CB'ers, they had a base station in their home, a massive antenna in their yard and their vehicles had powerful units that let them talk to people all over the country. They also had 6 granddaughters, I am one of the 6 and we all had our own CB handles, mine was Sunshine (the only blond in the group LOL.) The Sea Islander online store goes out to people all over the country, just like my grandparents did when they used the CB radio.
At The Sea Islander, we work hard to source fun and funky jewelry and treasures. Antiques, vintage, gently used and handmade items can be found in our online store. We will be adding handmade woodworking items from my husband, Anthony, and my son, Andrew. My mom, Charlie, makes jewelry, paints and draws. We have some of her items online now! My sister Allison is opening Palmetto Lady Craftworks, named for our grandmothers CB handle. Her work will be hosted in our Etsy store and on our website, watch for her page to launch!
Our "Miss Beaufort" Mermaid logo has a great story too, she was a design developed by my Aunt Lee and my Mom, Charlie. The drawing was done by my Mom and she was then created as a statue for Beaufort's Big Swim, a group of 31 mermaids located around Beaufort, SC. Why Miss Beaufort? My Aunt, Lee Perry Bender, was Miss Beaufort in 1962. Keeping it in the family!
